Meet Phil Regan, The Inspiration Behind Surf
Across America
Phil Regan is the man behind the idea to Surf Across America.
His objective in completing this surfing tour, with his son Spencer,
is to
stress the increasing importance of providing children with healthy
role models. And, to raise funds to develop a facility known
as Camp Makua
on the beautiful Hawaiian island of Molokai.
Camp Makua will be a place where parents can retreat with their
children. A place that nurtures their relationships in a non-stressful
environment and helps them grow — as individuals and as a family.
Phil’s passion for creating Camp Makua comes from his own disadvantaged
childhood. Removed from his home at the age of 7 and placed in foster
care, Phil bounced from home to home before he ended up at Devereaux
Santa Barbara — a school for emotionally disturbed children.
"This was an enlightening experience for me,” explained Phil. “I
had been ‘spinning out’ pretty bad, running away from foster
homes and wondering around without any goals. Then, one day a classmate
asked me to surf. Well, that was it! It changed my life forever."
Phil has been surfing for more than 30 years now. In 1994, he decided
to use his life experiences in a positive way, share his passion
for the sport, and started what was then known as “Camp Daddy.” Camp
Daddy brought fathers and their children together for an afternoon
or weekend of surfing fun in California.
Today, Phil is taking the Camp Daddy model and hoping to transform
it into a facility known as Camp Makua. Making a conscious effort
not to be like his own father, a violent alcoholic, his goal in making
this
dream a reality is to communicate the vital importance of:
• Fathers spending time with their kids.
• Providing healthy role models for parenting.
• Sharing life experiences with your children and others.
